Fondation Etoile (Star Foundation) is a non-profit organization based in Bukavu, DRC, in the region of Kivu, North East of the country. This region is particularly known for having been affected by many intestine civil wars, mainly due to economical grounds (the exploitation of coltan and cobalt for major electronic industries).
Due to these numerous ongoing wars, there is a large number of orphans in the main city of Bukavu, capital of South Kivu province. These orphans have been refugees from the countryside, and are vulnerable to economic and sexual exploitation.
The goal of the foundation is to teach them the basics of education and of a manual work they could use to be freed from this exploitation. The Star foundation believes that this is the only way to save them from modern slavery.
Why us ?
The vast majority of programs run by big NGO's is taking care of people in refugees camps.
They have very strict criterias for helping, which include only people having the "chance" to be taken in in camps, or being in a zone over 10% malnutrition for instance. The issue is that to certificate this level of malnutrition, one must pay a government official to do a sanitary check of the zone ; in the slums of Bukavu and Goma, so many people are living in horrid conditions without anyone taking care of them, just next to the big NGO's offices.
